When & Where to go for Health Care

As a millennial mom of 4 living in the twenty first century, I feel very fortunate to know that I can count on a quick video call with a physician, or make a quick stop to an urgent care facility at UCHealth  when a health situation at home occurs. I am here to share with you many other ways to get care, even when things come up unexpectedly and you need to be seen asap without it costing your entire life savings.

Real Life

About three weeks ago, we were getting ready to celebrate our youngest daughter Avie Lou, she was about to turn two years old and we had all the fun and cute stuff planned out for her little party. Unfortunately, like many unexpected things in life - she woke up one day before her Birthday with a pink eye, I had no idea how, or where this could have come from and I felt helpless. We played the wait it out game which later became worse and the pink eye spread to the other eye causing her discomfort and weakness. At this point I felt very concerned and decided to give her doctor a call, it was 3pm and her primary physician doesn't take appointments after 4 and by the time I would arrive they would be closed (mind you, it was the weekend). I was left with no other option but to stop by a UCHealth Urgent Care and hope for the best. To my surprise, I was able to go online and pick a time to be seen, it was so easy to set everything set up and they accepted my insurance!

When it comes to deciding whether visiting an emergency room or urgent care facility, it is important to make the right choice - for your own health, and for keeping emergency rooms open for true emergencies. 

Emergency- If illness or injury seem more critical than something you would see your primary doctor for, or you need care in the middle of the night:

• Bone fractures

• Intoxication, overdoes 
• Severe bleeding, poisoning

Urgent Care-  If its after hours, or you can't get an appointment with your doctor right away, urgent care is the right choice:

Convenience and comfort.

You know those times when you or your children have a sinus infection, sore throat, or cough and you know you want to speak to a health care professional about it but don't want to leave home? You guys, its 2019! Virtual Visits are a thing, and to be honest, it would have saved me so many trips to the clinic. This is especially convenient for us moms, (more so if you have more than one child and want to avoid taking everyone into the office) it saves you the time, hassle and possibly even the weather conditions outside (if you live in Colorado, you know exactly what I'm talking about). You'll be seen and treated by a UCHealth provider- just without the drive.

Being able to feel comfortable and confident with the choice you make when dealing with your health care choices is super important.
